Cumulative Effects Assessment: Linking Social, Ecological, and Governance Dimensions Ecology and Society
Weber, Marian; Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures; marian.weber@albertainnovates.ca; Krogman, Naomi; Department of Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology, University of Alberta; naomi.krogman@ualberta.ca; Antoniuk, Terry; Salmo Consulting Inc.; terry@salmoconsult.com.
Setting social, economic, and ecological objectives is ultimately a process of social choice informed by science. In this special feature we provide a multidisciplinary framework for the use of cumulative effects assessment in land use planning. Forest ecosystems are facing considerable challenges driven by population growth and increasing demands for resources. In a suite of case studies that span the boreal forest of Western Canada to the interior Atlantic forest of Paraguay we show how transparent and defensible methods for scenario analysis can be applied in data-limited regions and how social dimensions of land use change can be incorporated in these methods, particularly in aboriginal communities that have lived in these ecosystems for generations....

Recreation, Tourism, and Rural Well-Being AgEcon
Reeder, Richard J.; Brown, Dennis M..
The promotion of recreation and tourism has been both praised and criticized as a rural development strategy. This study uses regression analysis to assess the effect of recreation and tourism development on socioeconomic conditions in rural recreation counties. The findings imply that recreation and tourism development contributes to rural well-being, increasing local employment, wage levels, and income, reducing poverty, and improving education and health. But recreation and tourism development is not without drawbacks, including higher housing costs. Local effects also vary significantly, depending on the type of recreation area.

Social Impact Assessment of the Proposed Dodds-Roundhill Coal Gasification Project AgEcon
This project report was completed by 14 graduate and undergraduate students in a social impact assessment course (AREC 450-550) during the Winter Term, January to April, 2009. The overall goal of this project was to learn specific concepts and methods for social impact assessment by undertaking such an assessment for the proposed Dodds-Roundhill Coal Gasification project (Southeast of Edmonton, Alberta). The social impact assessment is composed of four major components: (1) scoping of relevant social indicators, (2) social impacts within municipalities, (3) social impacts within the farming region, and (4) a comparative case study of social impacts. Together, the four project reports provide insights into the potential social impacts from the proposed coal...

The Challenge of Developing Social Indicators for Cumulative Effects Assessment and Land Use Planning Ecology and Society
Mitchell, Ross E.; Environmental Resources Management; ross.mitchell@ualberta.net; Parkins, John R.; University of Alberta; jparkins@ualberta.ca.
This paper provides a synopsis on social indicators as relevant to cumulative effects assessment and land use planning. Although much has been done to better understand the social dimensions of environmental assessment, empirical work has been lacking on social indicators that could be used either as measurable inputs or outputs for cumulative effects assessment and land use planning in different kinds of communities and regions. Cumulative effects models currently in practice often fail to address deeper issues of community and regional well-being. Against this gap, social scientists are being asked to make reliable generalizations about functional, measurable relationships between certain social indicators and land use change or scenarios. To address...

Um Estudo sobre a Pobreza Rural com Abordagem Multivariada AgEcon
Neder, Henrique Dantas.
